Calling for entries

Queries regarding photo submission are coming in. Keep the photo entries coming in as the deadline for submission is 1 April 2012. This year, we will make the photos into postcards again, and all proceeds go to Cat Welfare Society. Thank you!

Photos submission is FREE - just send us your best shots to sublime.carla@gmail.com. Then we will pick the shortlisted photos to be exhibited. The photographers will pay $10 for each shortlisted photo if they want to be part of the exhibition and they will also surrender all use of the photos for sale and reproduction.

Photo Criteria:

CONTEXT/ SETTING:
Cats in unique situations, settings or countries, that capture the unique flavours of the backdrop; be it a cat napping in a Cambodian temple or slinking next to a Grecian column, or sunbathing atop a thatched rooftop. We accept cats photos shot in Singapore and around the world in far flung away places.

CHARACTER:

Cats with personalities that make you go awww, ooooh, yaaay, heehee; pictures that elicit any type of sounds from the viewers are generally heading in the right direction. We are tickled by photos that capture the feline characteristics - including lazy, aloof, loving, graceful, sneaky, timid, streetwise, boh-chap, fiesty, etc.

STORY:
A picture speaks a thousand words - sometimes great pictures need no words as the emotions (pride, envy, love, sadness) are written over the cats' faces. We look for photos with a story to tell, or one with a strong punchline or matching captions.

QUALITY/ QUANTITY:
Digital photos have to be clear and at least 300 dpi to be blown into A4/A3 size quality for exhibiting's purpose. We also accept black/white, sepia, lomo or iphone photos as long as their quality is not compromised. There is no limit on the number of photos you can submit but please be discerning in your photo selection and try to submit no more than 10 of your best entries.

PAYMENT:
This is an entirely self-financed and non-profit project, thus all contributors are required to pay a nominal S$10 per Shortlisted Photo for admin costs. So if you have 3 Photos Shortlisted, kindly include S$30. You don't have to pay anything at submission stage. We welcome entries from all ages including children too. These proceeds will be donated to CWS via a cheque donation.
**Photographers have to submit their own shortlisted prints if there is no print sponsor.

SELECTION:
The selection process is determined by the co-organisers and entry decisions made are final. All print/sale and reproduction rights of the photos belong to Cats of The World Photo Exhibition once selected for exhibition. The organisers reserve the right to re-print and sell the photos for fundraising purposes or make them into magnets, postcards and other merchandise to raise funds for our adopted charity.

Charity Weekend Purrzaar - 11 & 12 February 2012

Gong xi fa cai everyone! We have been busy stuffing our faces since the festive mood kicked in from Christmas till Chinese New Year now. Time flies and it's 2012 already! We haven't found a new exhibition venue - but have a few ideas in mind. But before that, we're pleased to announce that we have raised $1,800 from the recent Charity Weekend Purrzaar market on 11 and 12 February 2012 (12pm-6pm) at Stacked dim sum bar (Robertson Quay) for the private cattery Blessing Home http://blessinghomeshelter.blogspot.com, where we have volunteered and even adopted a cat, Lola (Snowy)!

Our usual Purrzaar vendors were there - including Oatsie's Trunk, Smeowly Cats, Library, Sloth Studio, Dainty Hands, WILD and Momshoo - all selling gorgeous, handmade cat-themed merchandise from tote bags and diaries to jewellery and artwork! Those who are keen to take up a stall at future purrzaars can contact us - it is S$50 for 2 days.

Cats of the World organisers are selling postcards at $1 and quirky cat photos at $10 that were exhibited in previous years. Cat photos are taken all over the world and showcase the cats in interesting settings.

Dainty Hands offers all things sweet and pleasing to the eye from cake lollipops to satisfy the sweet tooth to kitty toys and potted grasses to pamper your furry feline friends. If you have been following our Facebook page, you'd know we are trying to get these beautiful cats adopted. Our friends and I are fostering them at our own expense at the moment. We really hope you cat lovers will open your hearts and give them a safe loving home. Most of them have been rescued off the streets and nursed to health and sterilised. Our very first Saturday Purrzaar Market on 4, 18 and 25 June 2011 was a smashing success! The crowd trickled in slowly but surely and kept streaming in all day. From what we gathered, everyone loved the photo exhibition, postcards and cat-theme quality crafts from the talented local artists. Cat Welfare Society had as much fun as we did too. Plus we sold most of our postcards and Snapper the glamour cat was also sold for S$99. In total, $3,500 was raised from the exhibition/ purrzaar. So a big thank you to everyone!

It's also great news to see that MND is urging AVA and Town Council to review their cat culling policies of late. Let the killing stop and loving begin. We are so excited we sent an invitation to Minister Khaw and Tan to come to our next Purrzaar to see how many cat lovers there are in Spore.

‘Cats of The World’ Photo Exhibition is back for the fifth year running! This year the exhibition celebrates its fifth anniversary with a month-long exhibition from 2 to 30 June 2011 at The Arts House, as well as the inaugural Saturday ‘Purrzaar’ that will offer quirky, unique cat-related merchandise and crafts by local artists as well as a booth by Cat Welfare Society. This cat-themed flea market happens on three Saturdays in June – 4, 18 and 25 June (from 11am to 6pm) and is a great way for one and all to have fun and purchase a feline keepsake!

The non-profit exhibition features 50 photos from 27 aspiring and professional photographers from all walks of life, to share the joys of our feline friends and that cats all over the world are the same - lovable and purrrrfect! This year’s snapshots of cats capture them in their element – graceful, lazy, sneaky, aloof, loving etc, in unique settings and backdrops around the world, including Singapore, Jordan, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Scotland, UK, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Nepal. Photographing cats is an art and takes a lot of patience and luck, so this exhibition showcases the fun and often spontaneous works of photography enthusiasts and cat lovers.

27 Contributing Photographers of “Cats Of The World 2011”

Alexandra Jen Wong has taken part in Cats of The World since it started five years ago, and is currently waiting to enter university. Until that happens, she plans on travelling, making postcards, reading, and spending lots of time with her two dogs and five cats.

Anne Young shares her home with one naughty West Highland White Hamish and two cats, Jaime and Lizzie. She loves all animals and has focused her photography on capturing their beauty and contribution to our lives so they are better valued!

Ang Pek Boon is a software engineer who runs an IT company with Rob and Erik. Rubber was rescued by Erik from someone who tied a rubber band on her tail. She lost her tail but not her attitude. The company adopted her as an office cat before Pek Boon decided to bring her home.

Bella Koh and the Bobsters are a bunch of Tiong Bahru neighbours who have banded together to get Bob well again. From the time this handsome and loving stray cat went missing, through many painful rounds of surgeries and finally being saved by expert surgeon Dr Ly, we share his story to the world.

Carlyn Law aka Carla is a PR consultant by day and off duty, she is always on the prowl for good food, green pastures and cats around the globe. As organiser of Cats Of The World, mamma to two cats and a green volunteer, she is thrilled to share her love for cats and wishes more people will give each cat a loving home.

Casryn Yap is a graphic designer who loves children and animals. She likes to spend her free time taking photos of flowers, her miniature dolls as well as her naughty little nephew.

Chris Pulling is a full-time teacher and part-time photographer who enjoys traveling the world with little more than a camera and a toothbrush.

Christ Mong is a full-time weddings and events photographer. In his free time he likes to explore nature, landscape and street photography. Although he doesn't own any cat, he has affection for them since young.

Dave Law KH is a semi-professional photographer who enjoys landscape and portraiture photography. He believes in contextual moments and occasionally takes on wedding assignments.

Dolphin Lim is an office administrator who loves to snap interesting pictures randomly. She loves photography and always carries a camera with her wherever she goes. She absolutely adores cats because they are natural born models! No matter how cats pose, their expressions and emotions never fail to amuse people.

Ejun Low is a portrait photographer and founder of design and branding company, Anamics Creative Group. An advocate for portrait photography as well as an avid animal lover, his love for cats grew as he started befriending the generations of strays that called his neighborhood home.

Gail Quek is an uncivil servant who has been accused of travelling just to coo over and annoy foreign cats. This is a baseless allegation because they’re not always annoyed; they’re sometimes royally peeved as only cats can be. In between feline fawnings, Gail enjoys reading, good food and healing with hypnotherapy.

Jassica Lee thinks that cats are the purrfect companion - elegant, graceful and independent. When she's not pretending to be pomelo cat, Jassica enjoys taking snaps of them.

Jenny Ng is a writer from Freeflow Productions. She looks like a human and behaves like one. But she’s a cat, really.

Joe Tjiam is a graphic consultant who graduated from Lasalle/ RMIT and he loves taking cats with his cameras and simply adores feline’s unique characters.

John Tay is a student at Republic Polytechnic. He is an animal lover and always regards his pet as the best companion and listener.

Ketan Shah took up photography about six years ago and loves the challenge of photographing stray cats, as they force you to look in places people don't normally look, and to make quick shooting decisions. These are skills that are useful in any type of photography.

Koh Mui Fong, TODAY photojournalist and mother of one, enjoys taking photos of stray cats whenever they capture her eyes. Ever since she took a photo of two kittens that really captured her heart, she has not stopped snapping photos of stray cats.

Lawrence Liu is a fine art student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. His passion lies in listening to the aesthetical whisper in all forms of life; discovery is an excitement to him. He believes that a normal person sees a storm, thinks help and runs away but an artist sees that same storm, runs in the other direction.

Lee Yan Leong has always enjoyed photography since young. Most of his spare time was spent doing nature photography. Apart from his passion in shooting insects and flowers, he does a lot of cat shots. When he travels, the thing that makes him feel at home is when a cat appears. Cats in whatever country seem oh-so-lovable!

Lim Soon Hoe is currently on a break from work and one of his favorite past time is photography. As for cats, he just likes the way they move and laze around - they’ve got style.

Lynette Foo runs Palate Sensations Cooking School in Singapore but she is currently in Bangkok undertaking her chef's certification at Le Cordon Bleu Dusit Culinary School. She is a passionate cat lover with six cats. When she is not cooking, you will find her rescuing and feeding stray cats in Bangkok.

Lynn Lim is an interior designer who is always hungry for idyllic travels. She also loves good food and hanging out with her bunch, and occasionally longs for more time on her hands to indulge in simply doing nothing.

Nicholas Lee is an avid self taught photographer that seems to take better pictures of pets than humans. While more of a dog person, the grace and attitude of cats slowly won him over. Dogs still remain his first love and he would like to keep one someday.

Sia Aiwei is an art director and has worked at several advertising agencies for more than 10 years. Her hobby in photography of her five cats accelerated when she created her own brand of designer handmade pet collars and founded PawGlam! in 2010. She enjoys capturing the golden moments of innocent young kittens that she fostered and their interaction with her adult cats.

Terence Koh is a freelance designer and illustrator. He enjoys lazing around with his cats, trigger-happy with his camera, and doodling artworks both digitally and traditionally.

Zack Wang Zhixiang enjoys all various forms of photography, constantly learning and sharing new techniques keep my passion in photography alive. It is amazing and wonderful what a little camera is capable of, the ability to freeze that special moment and turn it into forever lasting memories.

This year, we aim to showcase more photos to give everyone a chance to show off their photos - even kids under 16 can take part too! So get your kids involved and love cats from a young age. The excitement is building up as we crossed into March and the photo entries are slowly coming in as we send out the call for entries (submission deadline is end of April). Details for Purrzaar - the cat-theme Saturday bazaar - are also being fnalised and we've gotten 3 vendors patted down (all selling wonderful quirky cat-style merchanise). We have also found our print sponsor and doorgifts sponsor - hooray, everything is falling into place for this Lunar New Year of the Rabbit (although the Vietnamese might differ as they insist on this being the Year of The Cat, which we won't contest).

We also just recently rescued a community kitten, who is named Bobby for his lil bob tail. At 8-month old, the ginger cat is a darling with his inquisitive eyes and affectionate nature. As 2010 comes to a close, it's time to reflect on the past year and look forward to a new year ahead. Our wishes for 2011 are that more people will adopt the stray cats and give them a loving home, and that pet owners will also be responsible for the welfare of their cats (i.e keeping them indoors, sterilising them etc). For example, I saw a scruffy white cat in my neighbourhood 2 months ago and then recently it disappeared. A lady told me the cat was abandoned by a family when they moved and it was left alone to fend for itself. No one knew what happened to it... I thought why would you leave your kids behind when you move?

We humans are here for a purpose - to look beyond our differences and work together to protect the weak and this beautiful planet Earth. God knows how long we'd see that day but we pray that we don't have to wait too long before it's too late. We all have a part to play - one step at a time, we can create ripples in our own ways... do what's right, and not what's easy. let your conscience and consciousness guide you in this new year and bring about positive change. Purrfect 5th anniversary

Ho ho ho, with the festive mood in the air, we've bundled our 2010 postcards at $10 for 8 to raise more money to the CWS kitty fund. So far, a few orders have come in but not fast enough! :) I know we also wanted to organise a cat photography workshop but the corporate company that I approached did not get back to me, arghhh.

And please remember to take more cat photos on your year-end trips or during the school holidays in S'pore. Before you know it, the exhibition in June 2011 will come round soon (photo submission deadline is the end of April 2011). For our 5th anniversary, we have ambitious plans; firstly we are introducing 2 new categories - Celebrities and Children (under 16) - in addition to the open category. Our photo criteria remain the same (just scroll down the webpage).

The Arts House also gave us the green light for our cat-theme Saturday Purrzaar market. We're looking for unique/ original, cat-themed crafts, artwork, accessories etc and the small rental fee ($50 for 2 Saturdays) will go to Cat Welfare Society too. We hope to better our fundraising target of $3,500 set in 2010, and again we need all the support from you cat lovers. Hurray, we set out to meet the target of raising S$1,500 this year but to our pleasant surprise, we've smashed the target and raised S$3,500 to date - more than doubled the amount raised last year! Hurray and BIG thanks to everyone who has contributed in every way; from the sponsors and media, to the photographers and buyers/ visitors. We can't do it without you.

On Saturday 31 July, we were also at the Cat Welfare Society's flea market/ adoption drive at Mutts & Mittens pet hotel and shelter at Pasir Ris farmway 2. It was sad to see all so many cats at the shelter and we sincerely hope people will adopt these kitties and give them a loving home.

For now, please take more cat photos on your travels or in S'pore because we'll be back again in June 2011 at the Arts House. We hope to put up a bigger show and also include a cat-theme flea market on the opening Saturday Purrzaar so send us your ideas and we will shortlist our vendors from there. We're looking for unique/ original, cat-themed crafts, artwork, accessories etc. We will impose a small rental fee ($50 for both Saturdays) and proceeds will go to Cat Welfare Society.

I was looking back at the event photos taken at our first year's exhibition and realised that 'Cats of The World' has come a long way. What started as a pet project has spun into a big-love community exhibition where people from all walks of life can take part in it and also view the photos for free. Over the years, our media friends have also been very supportive which helped to spread the word and love for us. This year, we are fortunate and grateful to be featured in the papers, tv, magazines and websites (see some of the articles here).

Hopefully, more sponsors will come onboard for the fifth instalment next year - and let's pray for more reliable and generous sponsors!. I have a vision to organise it into a lifestyle event where cat lovers can truly come together - at a flea market or charity dinner. Hooray!

CONGRATS to the 29 contributing photographers of “Cats Of The World IV” 2010! *applause*

Adriana Yue is a freelance web project manager and has an obsessive habit of collecting stamps on her passport and taking pictures of any strangers and objects, recreating scenes in any old movies she’s ever watched. She firmly believes she will end up like the crazy cat woman from The Simpsons.

Adriane Lee is a freelance film producer and designer who loves travelling, photography and all animals big and small. His wish is that people will adopt, not buy; sterilize, not breed, love and not abandon their pets.

Alexandra Jen Wong is currently waiting to grow up. Until that happens, she plans on travelling, writing postcards, taking pictures, and spending rainy days in the company of good books and lap cats.

Aloysius Low is a tech writer at popular website HardwareZone.com and recently took up photography as a hobby. Owner of two cats - Nomnom and Mookie, he keeps himself amused by trying to get them to pose for shots which he then spams all his friends with.

Amy Wan is a designer presently working in Singapore. Se loves travelling, good food and sports, and shares her home with three cats - Esky, Simba and Russell - who act as her bodyguards when she is home alone.

Barnie Leow is a professional photographer who enjoys taking occasional pictures of stray cats. While he shoots architecture, interiors, people and corporate portraits, the wandering stray cats will always have a special place in his heart, and in his frame.

Carlyn Law is a PR consultant by day and off duty, she is a hungry photojournalist who is always on the prowl for good food, green pastures and cats. As organiser of ‘Cats Of The World’ and mamma to two cats, she is thrilled that people are loving the exhibition. She wishes that everyone will love and protect the animals and nature on planet earth.

Chen Bin Yen is the co-founder of a local web design business who loves cameras and cats. These days, he only has time to shoot his nine-month old boy.

Cheoh Wee Keat is a student studying in London. He thinks that rocks and cats are the most beautiful things life has to offer, and that while both can be stroked, the latter is kinder to his hands. These two pet subjects are thankfully available in large abundance in Singapore.

Christopher Tan used to be more of a dog person, but his cat-loving friends and their cats have both rubbed off on him. One of the best compliments he has ever received was when a cat called Spot fell fast asleep in his lap.

Cyrian has come to appreciate nature and photography is his way of telling stories about nature, giving it a human context through his lens. He hopes that through his photos, he can show those caught in the rat race to take a moment and see the beauty of nature around us.

Dave Law KH is a semi-professional photographer whose day job is leasing of heavy machineries. Preferring his Olympus PEN more than his DSLRs, he is often mistaken as a Vietnamese/Thai/Filipino. His works can be seen on http://www.emotively.com/

Dennis Lee is currently working as a technical support engineer with RBS WorldPay. He owns two adorable cats at home and likes to spend his weekends roaming around Singapore taking photographs. He is very much into travel, landscape, portraits, cats and food photography.

Gary Quek and his wife Alice love their two cats and one dog. Working in civil service, Gary loves The Beatles, modernism, mountain biking, architecture designs and shopping in Tokyo. He is currently fantasizing about a villa in Lombok.

Jassica Lee thinks that cats are the purrfect companion - elegant, graceful and independent. When she's not pretending to be pomelo cat, Jassica enjoys taking snaps of them.

Ketan Shah took up photography five years ago. He loves the challenge of photographing stray cats, as they force you to look in places people don't normally look, and to make quick shooting decisions. They are great skills to have for all kinds of photography.

Kyle Leung is a budding photographer who likes cats as much as humans. He communicates in LOLSpeak whenever possible and is constantly in fear of being neutered. He also runs a food blog for humans.

Lawrence Liu is a student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. His passion lies in photographing moments that will bring a smile to the faces of the public. Being a cat lover himself, he often plays with stray cats and takes pictures of them. He hopes to have a dog and a cat staying with him in his dream home some day.

Lee Yan Leong is a public officer who loves to spend his free time on nature photography. He has a weakness for cute little animals, especially cats and enjoys shooting them whenever he goes.

Lucinda Law adores felines of all sizes, particularly her 17-year old tuxedo cat, Jarvis, and is fascinated by what a cat is called in various dialects and languages. Her recent favourite is 'ginger cat' in Teochew dialect.

Matthew Lee is an IT professional who loves to shoot scenery, stray cats he meets, and unsuspecting humans he knows. He feels it’s good to regularly take time to just laze and watch crazy humans scurry about, or just simply nap like cats.

Meredith Jones is currently studying to be a Visual Arts teacher. She loves to take photographs especially of Coco when she is being playful. Coco likes the attention and is very photogenic. She is also very affectionate and loves to have her fluffy belly rubbed when she lies on the couch.

Natasha Chooi is a corporate planner who lives with five dogs and many cats (don’t ask). Most of her time is spent with her pets and community cats (occasionally dogs). She loves cats for their prima donna personality.

Sulin Lee is currently a D.I Artist at a wedding photography company. An avid cyclist (road hazard), she spends her weekends exploring Singapore and playing with kitties that she meets along the way.

Tan Chek Wee’s philosophy is “A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” - Albert Einstein

Tan Shung Sin edits pictures for a living at an international news agency. He loves photography, music, travel and cats big and small. He finds himself taking more pictures of furry felines than humans on his travels.

Vanessa Sng is a fashion design student from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts who spends her free time looking for cats to befriend. She wishes she could just keep one special kitty but that idea has sadly been shelved due to a factor called “Mom”. Other than kitties, she enjoys shooting fashion portraits in her free time.

Xander Lee is currently an Art Director at Ogilvyone Singapore. When he’s not searching the internet for the next cat related viral video, Xander finds time to enjoy the little things in life (like catching up on the latest episode of Doctor Who).

Wendi Wandler volunteers with animal rescue in Canada, and organizes and promotes fundraising events. Her background is in marketing and advertising. Photography is a hobby and she absolutely loves photographing cats.

Opening madness

Hi folks, we had a fabulous opening nite at The Arts House on 2 June 2010. It was a mad last minute rush to set up the captions and all, but we did it right on time, just as the guests started to stream in! Just from last night's sale of cat photos, postcards and the photographers' contributions, we've raised S$600 already and at the first Sat, we made another S$260.

It has been a hectic week selecting the final 45 cat photos for COTW IV, but finally they are sent to print at MicroGrafix (thanks Richard!). This year, we're also making them into lovely cat postcards (thanks to Joy and Kevin of Purple-Pixel.com!).

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting COTW III at The Arts House - I can't believe it's over already! We had a blast and the turnout was great. Everyone loved the cat photos and bought many new cat magnets which bumped up this year's proceeds to S$1,334 (posted already to Cat Welfare Society for their wonderful catch-sterilise-release programme).

We still have many cat photos @ $50 each for sale if you want to do your part. I want to give a big thank you to our kind sponsors, all the 24 contributing photographers and supporters. Thanks for making it happen.

I'm also very happy that many people are very inspired after viewing the cat photos and will be on the prowl for cats so as to join next year where we'll be back at The Arts House for the whole month of June 2010. Although cats are such beautiful and photogenic subjects, it certainly takes a keen eye and quick reflex to capture them in their elements. But with practice and patience, I'm sure you'll be able to develop a talent for it!

We have shortlisted the 40 pictures contributed by 24 photographers this year for ‘Cats of The World III’ Photo Exhibition. I'm also pleased to announce that Fancy Feast, Canon Singapore and MicroGrafix, have come onboard as our official sponsors this year.

Alexandra Jen Wong is a student at ACS (Independent). Her favourite things include postcards and polaroids, the sound of the sea, and her typewriter. She longs for more drizzly days spent in the company of good books, as well as her two dogs and five cats.

Barnie Leow is a professional photographer and the main contributor to CWS’ cat photo book “The Real Singapore Cat” in 2005. Photographing stray cats started off as a hobby to capture the quirks and smirks of the many strays he encountered in Singapore. His works have earned international mention at the Lucie International Photography Awards.

Carlyn Law is a PR consultant and part-time photojournalist who longs for her own organic farm where her cats - Jarvis, Ripley and Mimi - can roam free. She dedicates this year’s exhibition to Uncle Anthony Yeo who passed away recently. Denise Tan works with the Spanish Tourism Board and loves taking shots of cats from Spain to Singapore. She is always browsing on deviant art for inspiration and spends her time figuring out how to improve her photography. Her favourite test subject? Her ragdoll cat, Piper.

Eric Ng likes travelling but doesn’t travel nearly enough. He eschews tourist traps, preferring to go on foot exploring the back streets and glimpse at the way of life left relatively untouched by progress. In between trips, he freelances as an event and wedding day photographer.

Faith Tan is a walking paradox just as a cat is - aloof but playful, beautiful but bestial, independent but highly in need of attention. Amazingly, she's got Jekyll & Hyde living under the same roof in perfect harmony for 21 years now. She longs to travel around the world and is currently living part of that dream sailing down Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia!

Goh Yam Guan is a full time IT professional, who found his passion in photography 6 years ago. He enjoys travelling and photography and loves to mingle with animals.

Heinz Gebhardt came across this exhibition by chance. In his life, cats and cameras always go together. Cats of all types have lived in his house and watched over him. Janalin Tan and Terence Koh dote on their Manja and will do anything to make their FIV+ kitty comfy and happy. It is their lifelong dream to open a cat sanctuary and take in all stray, abandoned and sickly cats, with a special hospice section for felines with incurable diseases.

Jeremy Gopalan has been known to stop in his tracks each time he spots a cat, wherever he may be or whatever he may be doing, to meow at it. He doesn’t know what he might actually be saying in meow language, but figures it can’t be anything too rude as the cats often respond. His friends are occasionally amused but usually bewildered.

Koh Zhisheng is a research assistant at NUS Department of Psychology. Photography is one source of expression to him and to look at and understand the world. Sadly, that is insufficient to understand cats’ behaviour, and so he will be turning to Google in the next 5 minutes.

Ng Ling Tze is a full-time artist who loves to paint cats and enjoy the company of cats. She fell in love with them when she met her first cat, Ban Ban, at a friend’s house in 2002. Noelle Tan is a cat lover who sadly does not own a cat - yet. That will soon change hopefully as she continues to appreciate the intrinsic elegant beauty of the feline species. This PR consultant enjoys photography, cooking and travelling.

Peter A. Robertson is an Australian karate instructor by profession and just arrived in Singapore in February to be with his new wife Veronica. He loves taking pictures and Veronica has him interested now in capturing the strays under his block, who are now getting used to seeing this ‘ang moh’ with his camera in ‘their’ neighborhood.

Rebecca Ho fell in love with the feline species as a child. She remembers her childhood living with her maternal grandmother, whose neighbour owns a mini-zoo at the 17th storey of a HDB block. Of the animals kept, she befriended a pretty calico which unfortunately took a fatal plunge.

Tan Chek Wee is a doctor who is part of a team of health care givers who care for the elderly in the community (community geriatrics) and also people who are reaching the end of their lives in their homes (hospice home care), and who believes that all sentient beings are interconnected like the web of a spider.

Ciao! The photo exhibition has sadly come to an end last weekend. Funnily we took so long to put it together and so fast it's over! That's why the organisers have decided to make it at least 3 weeks next year (tentatively in June). We are currently sourcing for venues and sponsors for more whacky framing / presentation ideas, so do contact us if you have any input!

On a happy note, we sold another cat photo to a Canadian reporter as we were taking down the photos. According to the Arts House, visitorship for 'Cats' has been high, and they saw people just coming in for the exhibition (yay!). And many of you have given us a lot of encouragement (thank you) so we're definitely pushing on with a stronger show next year.

To encourage greater accessibility to 'Cats', we have created a Group called "Cats Of The World Photo Exhibition" on FaceBook so do join us as a member! All the 40 photos are also put up on this platform so do view them online if you haven't been to the exhibition and would like to buy a photo for just $50 (hint hint)! Ta ;)

Preview party report

The preview party of 'Cats Of The World' was a success with a good turnout and support from the photographers, sponsors, and friends. We also managed to sell close to $300 worth of the cat photo magnets (courtesy of Ferne) - just $5 for 2, they will be on sale this Sunday at the Arts House from 3pm to 6pm. We also sold 5 photos at $50 each and hope to sell the rest within the next month.

We're all set - the 40 photos are finally selected from the many entries that you have sent in over the past 3 months - all in all, there are 22 contributing photographers this year compared to 13 last year! Our adopted group, Cat Welfare Society, will be gracing our preview party on 20 May Tuesday evening at 7pm and showcasing some of their CWS brochures and selling their merchandise that night.

We hope to raise some funds for CWS via a sale of the gorgeous cat magnets (courtesy of Ferne) as well as the cat photos from this year's and last year's collections (each photo costs just S$50 and sale will be on a first-come-first-serve basis). Here are the 22 photographers:

Alexandra Jen Wong is a student at ACS (Independent). Her favourite things include postcards and polaroids, the sound of the sea, and her typewriter. She longs for more drizzly days spent in the company of good books, as well as her two dogs and six cats.

Ashley Choo and her cat Baileys love each other to pieces even though it’s war everyday for them. If she points and laughs at him for sleeping awkwardly, he takes revenge by sleeping on her forehead the next morning. If she retaliates by introducing smelly socks to him, he will tumble and shed fur in her wardrobe.

Barnie Leow is a professional photographer and an avid fan of all things feline. Many of his photographs are featured in “The Real Singapore Cat”, a publication of the Cat Welfare Society. His other photographic works have also won honourable mention at international awards.

Brad Bertrand was born a cat person. A native of Canada, he has been living abroad for the past five years. Although teaching pays the bills, his true passions are photography and travelling. Carlyn Law is a PR consultant, part-time photojournalist and blogger who longs for her own organic farm in Italy where her three cats - Jarvis, Ripley and Mimi - can roam free. She relishes photography, travelling, food, cats and nature – usually all at once on her frequent voyages.

Chew Li Sie loves cats and started photographing local cats last year. For her photograph, she initially stumbled upon the two loving cats, which were her main focus, then ‘Third Party Cat’ entered the picture. She has since adopted the cat, FaFi, who is now happily settled in her new home.

Cristian Calangiu is an IT specialist from faraway Romania who has loved Asia as long as he can remember. He thinks he must have been Chinese in a previous life. He always loved dogs and lately has grown to love cats, thanks to a special friend. He hopes to get both a dog and a cat after he manages to move to his dreamland.

Dave Law currently is looking at life through different lens. He hopes to see the beautiful in the ordinary and vice versa. He also just started to explore the wonderful world of photography with his secondhand EOS400D and finds the opportunity to shoot whenever he can. He also often wonders why people treat animals better than they treat other humans.

Eunice Poh - photographer, musician and designer - draws inspiration from the workings and movements of daily life. She loves to play and talk to all the stray cats whenever they cross her paths. Harvey, her playful six-year-old cat, is her constant company for the hide-and-seek games at home.

Gay Sen Min is currently working part time while waiting to be matriculated into University. He takes pictures in his free time and aspires to be a professional photographer in future. He hopes to travel to third world countries on mission trips and capture images that will inspire and have an impact on people.

Joo Yau and Tara do not agree on everything. Tara loves cats while Joo Yau loves dogs. But they recently found a wonderful blend of their combined preferences in this suspiciously canine-like feline named Socks whom they’ve chosen to loosely adopt.

Ketan Shah picked up photography three years ago. He still has lots to learn but is having a great time learning it. In photographing stray cats, he saw facets of Singapore that we don't often see. He does not have any pets but often plays with his neighbour's cat, Duke Orange.

Kiera Roxanne - inspired by the captures of people like Boogie & Andy Mueller - is now more keen into capturing the emotions of people and street photography, ranging from kids smudging their faces with ice-creams to stray felines. Now she realizes her passion has become an addiction.

Ku and Meilam picked up two stray kittens on New Year’s Day of 2007. Xiao Huang, the male cat, is naughty and a big A$$ coward! Nonetheless, his mouth is pretty big when he yawns.

Little Ong is the design director of creative agency fFurious. In his spare time, Little likes to wander the streets to look for magic in the everyday, and the cats he encounters have certainly put their spell on him.

Lynn Gan is an internet marketing executive by day and a kitty chin scratcher by night. Once in a while, she takes time off to travel and see the rest of the world.

Noelle Tan is a cat lover who sadly does not own a cat - yet. That will soon change hopefully as she continues to appreciate the intrinsic elegant beauty of the feline species. This PR Consultant enjoys photography, cooking and travelling.

Rebecca Ho, a cat enthusiast, is active in running the Trap-Neuter-Release Management in her neighbourhood. Her new found hobby brought her to Pulau Ubin on a weekly basis. Over at the undeveloped island, she has befriended some of the native kampong cats and islanders.

Serena Teo is currently studying at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Since young, she has loved being with animals, and with the full support of her parents, her home became an adoption home to two dogs, three terrapins, two hamsters and a chinchilla. She misses her cat, Mao, who passed away.

Sharon Soh, a freelance writer/editor, enjoys photographing sleeping cats. “Cats are at their truest when they are asleep. That’s when they are totally at ease with themselves and environment, and they exude so much zen that you can’t help but feel a certain bliss just watching them snooze.” She and her husband Ben live with four cats and a mini pond of fishes.

Tetanus, author of A tiny blip in the continuum (http://atinyblip.wordpress.com/), is 30, male and very Cancerian. He lives for the resonance of beautiful passages, cinematic magic and aural bliss. He dabbles in writing, photography, sketching and daydreaming in his free time when he’s not directing TV ads.

Veronica J. Zuzarte loves all God’s beasts. Her dogs, King and Caesar, and cat Garfield lived to a ripe old age of 17, 4 and 18 years respectively and are still dearly missed. Her favourite quote is “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” by Mahatma Gandhi.

Benvenuto or welcome to the blogsite for "Cats Of The World' photo exhibition aka 'Gatti Del Mondo' in italian.

After a successful inaugural exhibition last year at The Moomba, we're so pleased to announce that "Cats of The World II" 2008 photo exhibition will be taking place from 20 to 31 May 2008 at the Arts House! A BIG thank you to the kind folks over there at the Old Parliament House...

This year’s exhibition will be bigger and better, and continues to spread the message about the joys of our feline friends and that cats all over world are the same - lovable and purrrrfect!

A visual celebration of cats, the photos - contributed by amateurs and professionals - will showcase these furry animals in unique situations and settings (such as out-of-reach rooftops and Mediterranean islands!) in various countries, which also capture them in their element – graceful, lazy, sneaky, aloof, loving etc.

The idea of the exhibition first came about because a bunch of cat lovers realised they have a small collection of cat snapshots taken all over the world in exotic places such as Morocco, Italy, Turkey, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. And when we spread word about it, we got some lovely pictures of cats in Singapore too!

With this exhibition, we hope to create awareness that cats and animals in the bigger picture have a place in our society and heart. As our world becomes more developed and crowded, there seemed to be less public space and compassion for animals. So let us celebrate the joys of our feline friends and all creatures big and small!

"Cats Of The World II' Photo Exhibition

Photos Criteria:
- CONTEXT/ SETTING: cats in unique situations, settings & countries, that show their characteristics - lazy, aloof, loving, graceful, etc (please refrain from sending photos of your pets at home)

- STORY: photos with a story to tell, reflecting the flavours of that country/ unique situation/ setting

- QUALITY: photos have to be clear and at least 300 dpi to be blown into A4 size quality for exhibiting's purpose

What's New This Year:
- This year's collection will feature 50 cat photos, including a new section called "Mono-tones" that is devoted to black-n-white or sepia shots, so click away!

- We're also hoping to raise funds for our adopted Cat Welfare Society via a silent auction. Visitors can bid for each exhibited photo by emailing us their secret top bid amount. The photo will go to the highest bidder at the end of exhibition.

- Since this is an entirely self-financed project, each contributor is required to pay a nominal S$15 per photo for framing and admin costs. So if you have 3 photos shortlisted, kindly include S$45.

- This year, HP is sponsoring the printing of the photos so contributors just have to email us the hi-res photos once shortlisted. Framing and exhibition launch costs will be parked under admin costs.

- We are not profiting from this personal project which is meant to share everyone's love for cats and passion for photography. Contributors will get this chance to exhibit their works as well as "donate" their photos to raise funds for Cat Welfare Society - all for a good cause!

- The selection process is determined by the co-organisers and entry decisions made are final. Email us your entries from now untill 30 April 2008 - submission deadline.

Preview Party for Cats of The World 2007

The preview party went very well and judging by the photos taken of the event, you can see The Moomba @ Level 2 was pretty crowded. We'd like to thank The Moomba again who provided the refreshments and soft drinks for the evening, all the contributors and the media for their kind support. Today newspaper sent a photographer to cover it and ran a big story titled "Picture Purr-fect" on 2 August 2007, Thursday.

In addition, it was featured as the top pick under Events by The Straits Times on 2 August, IS Magazine (3 August issue) and Shin Nichi Ho (Japanese, 2 August). Special thanks also go to AsiaOne.com, ClubPets, Frequent Traveller, Lifestyle, New Man, Wine & Dine and Time Out S'pore - grazie tutti!

Alexandra Jen Wong is a Secondary 4 student from the Singapore Chinese Girl’s School. She received her camera as a Christmas present and has been experimenting with it since. She spends most of her time enjoying the company of her cat, Whiskey Jose, and her dogs.

Ashley Choo was a writer but currently attempting to get back into the writing industry and so in the meantime, whiling away her time being a hobbyist photographer. In the event of a fire, the first things she will grab is, depending nearest object, her cat Baileys, camera and laptop.

Barnie Leow is a professional photographer and an avid fan of things feline. Many of his photographs are feature in “The Real Singapore Cat”, a publication of the Cat Welfare Society. Christopher Tan is a writer, photographer and food consultant who saw Cats in the West End in 1981 but didn't really enjoy it. He used to be more of a dog person, but now has so many cat-loving friends that he is ambipetstrous.

Dawn Kua is the only full time employee of the Cat Welfare Society (www.catwelfare.org) which promotes sterilisation and management of community cats as the best and most effective way of controlling the community cat population. Elgen Kua is a dog lover who has grown to love his cat Tiggi that he and his wife saved from pneumonia. He loves to annoy Tiggi by mock-chasing him round the house and Tiggi returns the favour by chewing on his laces every time he puts his shoes on.

Kwok Wai Yow is a graphic designer, part-time netrepreneur, movie buff, photography enthusiast and enjoys exotic travel. She hopes to be able to combine blogging, travel and photography into a paying gig.

Lucinda Law is an assistant editor for a travel magazine in Hong Kong where she dreams about her 14-year-old tuxedo cat and gallant protector, Jarvis, in Singapore everyday. She is well-adjusted with many friends in HK but likes hanging around cats and is lately feeding feral cats in Victoria Park.

Noelle Tan is a cat lover who sadly does not own a cat - yet. That will soon change hopefully as she continues to appreciate the intrinsic elegant beauty of the feline species. This PR Consultant enjoys photography, cooking and travelling.

Paul Koh is one half of the painting duo more popularly known as paulMysh. Their unique body of captivating and vibrant cat-inspired art – the Catmasutra Series - has been extremely well-received in Singapore. His fascination for the local feline species has led him to explore the subject from acrylic paints to digitally captured images. The photos were selected from his “non-collectibles” exhibition in 2006, showcasing the beauty and predicament of street cats in Singapore.

Rebecca Ho is a student who works part-time for Cat Welfare Society. As a strong believer in Trap-Neuter-Release Management, she actively promotes and practices TNRM in the neighbourhoods to humanely control the population of community cats. She loves traveling, reading and basketball. She shares her home with 2 calico cats.

Veronica J. Zuzarte loves all God’s beasts and wishes she could keep company with her favourite animals - whales and dolphins – but accepts that dogs and cats make easier-to-cuddle companions.
